Performer and Record Label:
The Chainsmokers are an American DJ duo consisting of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. They signed with their manager Adam Alpert's label Disruptor Records, which is joint with Sony Music Entertainment, in April 2015. They are also signed with Columbia records and released the album 'Bouquet' through them. They are an American duo signed with an American based label therefore it can be assumed that most of their recording and music video production is done in America.'Roses'

Lyrics:
Take it slow but it's not typical
He already knows that my love is fire
His heart was a stone, but then his hands roam
I turned him to gold and I took him higher
But I'll be your daydream
I'll wear your favorite things
We could be beautiful
Get drunk on the good life
I'll take you to paradise
Say you'll never let me go
Deep in my bones I can feel you
Take me back to a time when we knew
Hideaway
We could waste the night with an old film
Smoke a little weed on the couch in the backroom
Hideaway
Say you'll never let me go
Say you'll never let me go1
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Say you'll never let me go
Say you'll never let me go
Say you'll never let me go
Ah
Ah
Say you'll never let me go
Deep in my bones I can feel you
Take me back to a time when we knew
Hideaway
We could waste the night with an old film
Smoke a little weed on the couch in the backroom
Hideaway
Say you'll never let me go
Say you'll never let me go
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Say you'll never let me go
Say you'll never let me go
Lyric Analysis:

Narrative:
The video is a narrative as its telling the story of the two characters. It follows a male and a female, but mostly focuses on the female throughout. The narrative is interrupted by the female dancing alone in a large space. It is a different way of her expressing her emotions and telling her side of the story. The video is focusing on the dependency the characters have on one another. The video shows that the two are reunited and love conquers in the end.
Shot Analysis:
Total Time = 4:00
Total Shots =154
Total Cuts = 148
Close-up Shots = 38
Long Shots = 50
POV Shots = 1
Over-the-Shoulder Shots = 2
It is important to note that there are a lot of combination shots such as 'close-up mid' or 'mid-long shot' and have been tallied in their individual categories as oppose to a separate combination tally.
Mise en Scene
Setting:
The initial setting was in a shop where the first shot of the female lead was shown. The cuts showed the male walking through an airport but there was no signs showed in a shot therefore the location was hard to perceive. There is a significant lack off geographic markers so the actual location isn't obvious at all. Initially I thought the video was set in either London or America however when i researched it i found out it was filmed in a number of locations including the city if Kuala Lupur and also in Japan. The setting in the locations is very deserted and empty. This gives off the significant impression of privacy and the need to want to keep the characters in their own little bubble and let the audience just focus on the characters and their narrative.
Costume, makeup and props:
The costumes and makeup on both characters is completely natural. By this I mean that both of them are wearing day to day clothes such as jeans and jackets. When the female is dancing she wears a short flowing dress which is dark and doesn't draw attention away from her dancing. Her hair is down and her makeup is natural.
In terms of props, there are two that stand out to me. First of all the cigarettes. Every time the line "smoke a little weed" is sung the video cuts to show the characters smoking. This creates a visual connection between the lyrics and whats being shown. Real marijuana couldn't be used in filming because in a large majority of places it is illegal and the use would've likely censored the video in many places. The other video which stands out to me is the use of the rose petals about 3/4 of the way through. They are thrown over the dancer and she dances through and around them. It makes sense to me that they are there because it adds something extra to the video and the song itself is called "'Roses', it features Rozes (the artist) and it wouldn't of made sense to use daises.

Lighting and Colour:
In this music video, it is mostly filmed at night, aside from the brief morning after shot half way through. This therefore means the crew has to be careful to make things shown but not make the lighting artificial, something they achieved quite well. The lighting and colour was very congruous to the setting for example the street lights being the main source of light in the empty street. The lighting and colour came across as very naturalistic and not artificial or hard to watch at all.

Camera and Editing:
The camera work and editing of this music video follows the basic EDM music video structure. By this i mean when the music cuts, so does the visual. The editing is dictated by the song itself and makes the cuts when the song does to make it look natural. At the same time the camera work has to fit the song and the editing, when the song is maintaing a solid pace and tempo - usually when the dancer is being shown - it makes sense for the camera to follow and track the dancer as oppose to cutting between a variety of different shots. It makes it easier to watch as an audience member and in my opinion more enjoyable. At the beginning of the video in the shop there are a couple of shots with subtle differences and are edited in, it gives off the agitated impression and interrupts the fluidity.Focus Group opinions:
"I love this video so much! I really like the story and connection i felt to the characters and their emotions. The dancing was a welcomed interruption to the narrative because I liked the fact the dancer was expressing her emotions through movement."
"This video isn't what I was expecting. It felt a little poppy in places and didn't always follow the EDM music video structure which in places was welcomed because it was different. I felt a connection to the dancer because I am one myself but didn't understand why the rose petals started falling randomly and pretty much came from nowhere."
"I love this song and the beat drops are awesome. However i think the video is a little tame and doesn't really fit the vibe of the song."
