Matching Sounds to Visuals Vs Matching Lyrics to Visuals

From doing some initial research into the coursework this year by looking at music videos I've realised that one of the first things noticed by the audience is the sound of the song itself. When an artist is creating a video for his/her song it is important that they match the sound of their song to the visuals. For example if the song is slow piano, it wouldn't make sense for the audience to see someone heavily banging on a drum. If it doesn't match it can be confusing which is more than likely to result in a disinterested confused audience. Equally, it is important to match the lyrics to the visuals because the audience will pick up on any mismatch eventually. If in the song there is a lyric or phrase that stands out, it makes sense for the artist and other people involved in creating the music video to visualise this lyric in the best way they can. This develops a connection between the song and the audience and in turn can make viewing the music video a more enjoyable experience. It is important to get the right balance if you want your music video to be successful and memorable.

This video is an example of matching the sound to the visual as well as the lyrics to the visuals. The video is set in a club which works well with the EDM music as thats its typically scene. The two girls in the bathroom are the ones mouthing the lyrics and seem to be taking a selfie hence the match with the lyrics and visual. The lyrics "but first, let me take a selfie" is the cue for the visuals to cut to a bunch of different shots showing people taking selfies or of ones already uploaded.

This video is funny because the visuals are quite contradicting to the lyrics as well as the sound in some places. This lyrics talk about forgetting about the relationship and the visuals show the memories the boys are trying to forget. Its contradictory because it seems like the moods are completely different, the songs sad but the visuals are happy. There are lyric matches such as "drove by all the places" and the visuals showed a car driving. The boys being alone in the rooms show the emotion that connects with the song and this shows the sound matching the visuals. In this video more so i have found the connection is more between the sound and visuals.

I feel like in music videos it is easier for artists to match the sounds with the visuals and focus on the lyrics in a minor way. Of course both are equally as important in the long run but not every video requires the lyrics to match what is going on visually. If an artist choses not to focus on the lyrics then it has to be done successfully in order for the audience to feel a connection to the song and video at the same time.
